OU Announces Plans to Tear Down Tower DormsAs you may have heard, OU has announced plans to demolish and replace the Tower dorms, some of OU’s and Norman’s most recognizable buildings. OU has done a wonderful job of preserving campus's early 20th century gothic buildings, and the mid-century modernist buildings are worthy of historic preservation, too.
Did you also know in 2018 the EPA measured construction and demolition waste that ended up in landfills at about 145 million tons? By contrast, plastic waste for that same year was nearly SIX TIMES less at only about 27 million tons. While taking individual steps towards sustainability such as using reusable straws is great, climate change can only be combated if we hold large corporations and institutions accountable as well. Will you join CCHS and the student group #RENOVATE in spreading awareness about the environmental impact of building demolition, and sign this petition calling for OU to #RENOVATE the Towers rather than send three 12-story buildings to the landfill? |
